A Field Trip to Tom’s Farm Market
Our preschool classes are attending a fall festival at Tom’s Market in Algonquin this month to pick pumpkins and enjoy the autumn weather. Mrs.Meehan’s class went first, this week and will be followed by Mrs.Cunningham’s and Mrs.Keck’s classes next week.
Mrs. Meehan’s class has been learning about the pumpkin life cycle. We were able to see many of the stages of the cycle at work in the field. We brought back a pumpkin vine and blossom as well as a green pumpkin and a fully grown orange one for our classroom. We have cut open that one to see the seeds and will save them for planting in the spring.
At the farm we enjoyed many interesting sights! The animals were abundant-pigs, cows, goats, horses, donkeys, rabbits, chickens and rabbits! We were able to go into the cooling shed and see the conveyor belt and pumpkin washing machine. We learned that gourds and pumpkins all have air in them that keeps them afloat in water. We took a hay wagon out into the field to gather our own pumpkins and gourds. We each got to pick a pumpkin and three gourds to take home.
Finally, we had a ton of fun in the play area. There were so many things to do that we ran out of time. There was a giant spider web, a hay bale maze, a hay bale mountain, tractor ride on toys, and an inground trampoline, to name a few.
We were very blessed to enjoy the company of Fr. Joji on our trip. He visits us in preschool practically every day. It’s rare that his busy schedule allows him to join us for long but it was our lucky day and he came along to add to the fun. The fact that it was supposed to rain but did not can be chalked up to divine intervention from him!
We have a lot of fun and we do a lot of learning here at Saint Anne Preschool. If you are interested in a tour or registration information, please contact the front office of the school or Mrs. Nancy Meehan at nmeehan@stanneschoolbarrington.org
